A pet microchip reader is a handheld, battery-operated scanner that uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect and display a unique identification number from an implanted pet microchip.

The reader emits a low-frequency electromagnetic wave. When held over an animal (typically between the shoulder blades), this wave inductively powers the passive microchip under the animal’s skin. The chip then transmits its programmed 9, 10, or 15-digit ID number back to the scanner, which displays it on a screen. Crucially, microchips act strictly as permanent ID numbers; they do not have GPS tracking capabilities.

- Universal Compatibility: Modern readers are largely universal. They detect multiple microchip frequencies (such as \(134.2\) kHz and \(125\) kHz) and read standard tag formats like FDX-B (ISO \(11784\) / \(11785\)) and EMID.
- Clear, Sunlight-Readable Displays: Equipped with backlit OLED or TFT screens, the scanners easily display the chip's unique sequence and confirm the type of chip detected, even in bright outdoor daylight.
- Built-In Memory: Most models include internal storage, allowing you to save anywhere from \(128\) to over \(500\) distinct scan records directly on the device before needing to clear the memory.
