Buhners Suture needle (large)

In stock

The large Bühner suture needle is a heavy-duty, specialized veterinary surgical instrument used to perform a Bühner stitch for the retention of vaginal or uterine prolapses in livestock. It is an indispensable tool in large-animal obstetrics. The instrument enables the deep, circumferential placement of thick suture tapes within subcutaneous tissue. This partially restricts the vulvar opening to prevent recurring tissue protrusion while safely allowing the passage of urine.

Specs & features.

The large Bühner needle is a long, rigid, unjointed metal rod measuring 12 inches (30 cm) in length. It features a flat, ergonomic handle at the base for firm gripping and rotational leverage. The shaft terminates in a sharp, slightly curved point designed to pierce tough perineal hide and navigate blindly through deep subcutaneous tissue blocks without deviating. Uniquely, its "eye" is located at the cutting tip (similar to a sewing machine needle), enabling the operator to pass the needle through the tissue completely unthreaded and then pull the suture material back down through the tract.

  • High-Grade Stainless Steel Construction: Manufactured from medical-grade surgical steel (typically SS 304 or German steel), offering excellent rigidity, rust resistance, and compatibility with standard autoclave sterilization.
  • Extended Reach (30 cm / 12"): The length provides the necessary physical span to safely bridge the dorsal and ventral boundaries of a large bovine vulva in a single pass.
  • Tip-Located Large Eye: The needle tip contains an enlarged slot (often measuring around 8mm x 2.5mm) explicitly sized to accommodate wide, non-cutting inflexible vaginal tapes or thick umbilical ropes.
